Sub-Object Nesting in Accounts Configuration
This feature gives you the ability to configure and surface multiple revenue objects and insights into the same view using Account Sub-Object Nesting.
This feature is in Clari's testing phase and will roll out to all customers when ready.
Note: Only Admin can follow the steps in this article and add sub-objects. Your org must be on RevDB to use this feature.
Use Cases
Here's a couple of examples of how sub-object nesting works:
Show me a list of my Accounts with Opportunities closing this quarter.
-
Accounts (reporting object)
-
Opportunities (query object)
-
Filters: opportunity.closedate = this quarter
Show me the various products already sold into an account within each opportunity closed-won.
-
Accounts
-
Opportunities
-
Opportunity Line Item
-
Filters: opportunity.stage = closed-won
Before you get started:
- Only Clari Admin can configure sub-object nesting.
- Nesting multiple related objects involves more complex configuration than a single related object i.e. Accounts > Opportunities requires less steps than Accounts > Opportunities > Products. Skip ahead to the next section if you wish to configure multiple related objects.
To configure single sub object nesting, follow these steps:
-
Go to Clari Studio > Field Configuration
-
Go to Actions (top right) > Create Mode
- Select "Custom Mode"
Now, you'll follow prompts:
- Give your new custom mode a name that resembles the use case or objects used i.e. Account Opportunities or Workloads. This is the name that shows up in the Accounts module when users select a mode to use
- You must use Salesforce as the Reporting Object Data Source and Account as the reporting object. For Query object, you can choose Salesforce or another source you’ve already configured in Clari.
- Under Mode Reference, choose Account and Field Reference choose Account ID. Owner field can be set to any ownership field either on the Account or related object i.e. Account.ownerid.

Note: The query object must have a direct relationship to the Account with an account.id field as a reference:

- Aggregation field can be any field as this is not currently used in the Accounts module i.e. opportunity.amount.
- Make sure you select Accounts as the module to use this mode in. Under Copy Fields, you can choose an existing Account owner mode. You can always change the fields later:

Once you make your selections, click Next.
Now, you’ll organize which starter fields are used in each “layout” within Clari (i.e. filters, the grid), or Insights Panel when clicking into an Account.
Make sure you select the “Accounts” layout (very top under "Sort Order In Layouts").

Beneath that, note the tabs under "Layouts in Accounts Module." Here's how each works:
- The Account Filterable layout will determine which fields your users can filter the set of accounts or related objects by. For example, adding Account.amount to the filterable layout will allow you to filter by that amount field.
- Account Grid layout is how you include fields in the Accounts table itself and allows users to sort ascending or descending. This allows allows user to make in-line edits and push changes directly to SFDC.
- Account Details layout exposes fields in the right hand detail panel when selecting an Account. For now, this is not editable and not supported for sub-object/related object fields.
On each tab, toggle off any fields you do not wish to include in this mode. You can always change back or add new ones in the next few steps:
Select Next > Create New Mode!
This mode may take a few minutes to show up in Clari. Once it is visible and selected, you should be able to now see Accounts with the ability to expand the related records beneath them by clicking on the V icon to the left of the account.
If you don’t see an option to expand, make sure you’re using the mode you’d just created here:

Now that you've set up a sub-object in the steps above to use as a base mode, this sections walks through sub-object nesting under the base mode.

In this section you'll create a leaf mode. This is the mode you'll select and use with the Accounts module to expand and collapse Accounts > Related object 1 > Related object 2.
To create a leaf mode:
-
Go to Clari Studio > Field Configuration
-
Go to Actions (top right) > Create Mode
- Select "Custom Mode"
And now as you fill out the mode this time, follow these instructions:
The Reporting Object must be Account.
Query Object can be any data source including Salesforce. This will be the bottom most sub-object nested in your configuration.
Select your Query object
Mode reference: Make sure you choose the custom base mode you’d created previously (i.e. Account Opportunities).
Field Reference: Choose the reference field that has a directly relationship to the parent object (opportunity.id in this case).
Owner and Aggregation fields can be anything you’d like.
Make sure you select “Accounts” and copy fields from the base mode to save time during configuration (see bottom of image):

After you fill out the above, click Next.
Make sure you select the Accounts Layout and quickly go through and toggle off any fields that are irrelevant to your use case, just like the steps in the previous section:

Now that your new mode has a 1st draft, let’s add some fields from this new related object so that you can filter, sort, and even edit them within the Accounts module.
- Go to Actions (top right) > Add Fields

2. Choose the Data Source and Object which contains the fields you want to add to expose in Clari:

3. Choose where you want to add these fields, one by one (only filterable or grid layout):
Note: For organizations on Territory Hierarchy in the Accounts module, orgs can only set up nesting with one additional object. Orgs can set up nesting with Accounts and Opportunities without issues. But, using multiple sub-objects in a nesting configuration won't work.
4. You must make all your selections before you can click Next. Once you're back on the Clari Studio home page, click Review Changes (top right).
6. Finally, click Publish changes.
FAQs
-
Why is there blank space throughout the Accounts table? This is likely because the column configuration or order of fields defined in the mode have many sub-object fields that are non-numerical values and cannot be aggregated at the parent Account object row. Try changing the order of fields so that those most valuable are at the top of the field order. If you’ve already done that, try expanding the Account and sub-object records by clicking on the “ v ” on the left of each account.

Why can’t I find the object I want to show within the Accounts module as a related/nested object? This could be because Clari hasn’t included it in the crawls from SFDC to make it available yet in RevDB. Because this is new data to capture, it requires a support ticket to pull this information in and configure it as part of your new modes.
